What’s your favourite movie?

by Silcocks @ 2008-05-27 - 14:56:54

I have listed my favourite movie from each of the last seven decades. I’m sure you’ll agree that this is no easy task. But, as you can see, each decade has produced one, clear, all-time “winner” (and I’m not talking Michael). No-one could possibly argue with any of these selections. Could they?

Nineteen-twenties
The Gold Rush
Charlie Chaplin at his creative best.

Nineteen-thirties
Wizard of Oz
Way ahead of its time.

Nineteen-forties
Citizen Kane
Brilliant – This was Orson Welles’ third movie as a director and he never bettered it in 39 further attempts.

Nineteen-fifties
Some Like It Hot
Funny, stylish, classy.

Nineteen-sixties
2001: A Space Odyssey
Best sci-fi movie ever made.

Nineteen-seventies
Star Wars
Game-changing movie-making.

Nineteen-eighties
Cinema Paradiso
Charming, captivating. And tears at the end.

Nineteen-nineties
Pulp Fiction
If you don’t agree this is one of the best movies of all time, I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger.

The Noughties - so far…
Sorry, there hasn’t been a good movie yet, this decade.

Agreed - let's wait and see....

Good choices. Never seen Citizen Kane, though (don't shoot me - or strike me down with grrrrrreat vengeance and fuuuuuurious anger...).

As for ones I've enjoyed this decade - Amelie, Lost in Translation and The Last King of Scotland spring to mind. And I must get around to seeing the City of God.

OK!
Nice choice - how about
Gladiator?
The Lord of the Rings?
Kil Bill....

I did enjoy Kill Bill - but, unlike most of the other Tarantino films, it's not one (or two) I want to watch over and over again. Very good, but not brilliant.

Gladiator, hm, I think the highlight was the Gluteus Maximus speech...

LOTR - I do love em. Mmmmm, Aragorn.... ;)

I really like your choices although I'd say there has been a great movie this decade... perhaps not too many classics in the traditional sense but it's still well worth checking out 'o brother where art thou' and 'there will be blood'
both absolutely great films for so many reasons!!
good work on the blog.

Thanks for the tip I shall look out for "O Brother where art thou" and "There will be blood".
I will reserve judgement until December 31st 2009!

Not got round to seeing any of those yet, with the exception of The Wizard of Oz - but most people have seen that! Being a Sci Fi fan, I intend to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, sometime.

Well I envy you because you are in for a treat when you do
get to see them.

When you finally get round to seeing 2001, make sure you watch it on a widescreen tv with the sound cranked up. And remember: it's not a comedy, despite one of Britain's comic geniuses being in it; and it has the best incidental movie music ever (Strauss, Thus spake zarathustra, etc). Enjoy!
